De-addiction

De-addiction

Addiction, whether to drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, is a widespread issue. While psychotropic drug abuse and excessive alcoholism often draw attention, other addictions frequently go unnoticed, leading to severe consequences over time. Although the reasons, effects, and types of addiction vary, de-addiction remains the only viable solution.

The effects of drugs on a person’s life are multifaceted. Addiction consumes time, energy, and money, negatively impacting the individual’s economy, family, and social relations. An addict is at risk of contracting several fatal diseases, potentially leading to death. Mental health deteriorates, resulting in underperformance, errors, job loss, and even criminal behaviour.

Ayurveda is often overlooked in de-addiction treatments, which typically involve psychotropic medications that induce artificial withdrawal symptoms. These effects may not be long-lasting. However, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to de-addiction, focusing more on the mental and physical aspects of the problem.

Panchakarma Treatments

Panchakarma consists of five major procedures designed to purify the body by eliminating accumulated toxins. The common Panchakarma therapies used in de-addiction are:

  1. Vamana (therapeutic vomiting using herbs)
  2. Virechana (use of laxatives)
  3. Vasti (use of medicated enemas)

Other purification methods include:

  1. Thakradhara (pouring buttermilk on the forehead)
  2. Thalapothichil (application of medicine on the head)
  3. Shirodhara (pouring of medicated oil on the head)

These treatments help detoxify the body, support its natural functions, and provide mental clarity and strength, enabling individuals to overcome addiction and lead healthier lives.
